Your cell turnover slows down
Cellular turnover is your natural exfoliation process, during which dead skin cells are shed to make way for new cells coming through. At a young age, our cells renew quickly and easily which is why we have plump, soft skin (and we recover from cuts quickly!) but as soon as we hit 25 years of age this all begins to slow down, leaving our skin looking a little dull and not quite as smooth as it once was.
For many, the first thought is to grab a scrub and exfoliate the dead skin cells away externally. However, this can aggravate the skin and is more of a quick fix. What you want to do instead is correct your natural exfoliation process by using Vitamin A products topically, which will help not only shed rough, damaged skin cells but encourage new, smoother and healthier cells to come through, giving your skin that wonderful radiance.
Decreased collagen production
Collagen (provides skin firmness) and elastin (provides skin elasticity and rebound) are components that give your skin a plump and bouncy appearance. However, as we get older and are affected by sun and environmental damage, we produce less and less collagen and elastin.
For example, after the age of 20, a person produces about 1% less collagen in the skin each year, resulting in the skin becoming thinner and more fragile with age. Then if we add the affects of environmental damage (tobacco use and exposure to pollution, for example) and sun exposure which can cause the skin to thicken and freckles and sun spots to form, the decrease in collagen production is sped up, giving the skin the appearance of roughness, uneven tone, brown patches and deep wrinkles.
To normalise the skin, stimulate natural collagen production and improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin you can use products with peptides, Vitamin A and Vitamin C. For best results, make sure you’re micro-needling these key ingredients in! If you are experiencing sagging of the skin in areas due to volume loss you can also try Colostrum gel.
Uneven skin tone
Over time you may notice your skin tone not looking as even as it once did, and darker patches forming in some areas. This is a result of sun/light exposure over the years. Due to the sun/light damage, our cells become weakened, resulting in overproduction of pigment and leaving the skin looking uneven in tone. To prevent this, make sure you are protecting yourself with SPF all year round and encourage others to protect themselves from a young age. (Most of our sun/light damage is done before our 20s!). Vitamin A and Vitamin C are perfect for correcting, repairing and normalising the skin and therefore evening out the skin tone.
Moisture levels drop
One of the biggest changes in our skin we notice as we get older is the increased feeling of dryness. This is because we produce fewer natural oils, cell renewal decreases, our protective barrier on the skin is weakened (so moisture retention drops) and our skin lacks is hyaluronic acid (a key ingredient) which is renowned for its ability to hydrate skin. To get our skin looking and feeling hydrated again, as well as to strengthen the skin’s barrier, a key solution is to apply hyaluronic acid and Vitamin A topically and take an omega internally.
